Description

These Homemade French Toast Sticks are a delicious and fun twist on classic French toast, featuring thick Texas toast or French bread slices cut into sticks, dipped in a sweet egg mixture, then cooked until golden brown and coated in a crunchy cinnamon sugar mixture. Perfect for a family breakfast or brunch, served warm with maple syrup.

Ingredients

Scale

French Toast Sticks

  • 8 thick slices Texas toast or French bread
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 cup half and half
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons butter

Cinnamon Sugar Coating

  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

Optional

  • Maple syrup for serving

Instructions

  1. Prepare the bread: Cut each slice of bread into 4 sticks and set aside for dipping.
  2. Mix the custard: In a shallow bowl, whisk together eggs, half and half, sugar, vanilla, and salt until well combined.
  3. Mix the coating: In a separate bowl, combine sugar and cinnamon and set aside.
  4. Heat the skillet: Place a skillet over medium heat and add 1/2 tablespoon butter. Let it melt and coat the pan evenly.
  5. Cook the sticks: Dip each bread stick into the egg mixture, letting excess drip off. Place in hot skillet, fitting 6-8 sticks at a time with space between. Cook 1-2 minutes per side until golden brown.
  6. Coat with cinnamon sugar: Remove cooked sticks from skillet and immediately roll them in the cinnamon sugar mixture until fully coated. Place on serving tray.
  7. Repeat cooking: Continue dipping, cooking, and coating remaining sticks, adding butter to skillet as needed.
  8. Serve: Serve the French toast sticks warm with maple syrup, if desired.

Notes

  • The bread should be slightly stale or thick-cut for best absorption without falling apart.
  • Use Texas toast or French bread for sturdy, substantial sticks.
  • Keep an eye on the heat to avoid burning the butter or toast; medium heat works best.
  • Butter can be substituted with a neutral oil for a different flavor profile.
  • For a dairy-free version, substitute half and half with almond or oat milk and use dairy-free butter.
  • These sticks freeze well; reheat in a toaster or oven for a quick breakfast.
  • Adjust sugar in the custard or coating for sweetness preference.
